The Kiwanis Club of Victoria, together with the Kiwanis Club of Oak Bay, Key Clubs from Claremont and Oak Bay High schools and UVic's Circle K Club operated aid station #12, as they have done for more over 25 years. About 45 people volunteered their valuable time to help make the marathon a huge success.
For over 3 hours the high school and university students, sporting this years bright red shirt cheered, clapped and encouraged the many awesome runners as they passed us in the race. It's a long day for the volunteers standing on the waterline, but the atmosphere was awesome right up until the very end.
During the race I overeheard so many runners expressing their thanks, both for the aid and for the extra energy and enthusiasm at this difficult 30 km point.
One of our younger club members has been volunteering for 14 years. Next year I plan to include my young daughters in the activities of the day, both to give them an oppourtunity to volunteer in the community and to work along side these amazing role models.
A very big thank you goes out to past LG Ron George for all his work organizing the volunteers and running the Aid Station.
